Richmond's Baby & Child Expo Reviewed

My day started on Friday morning, around 9am. My friends Paul, Jeff and Olivia had come over the night before to help me put the finishing touches on the Spongebob Squarepants LEGO mosaic. Paul popped in the last LEGO brick and I started getting the mosaic mounted to the baseframe.

Earlier in the week, I was wondering what to use for a demonstration at the Expo. I hunted around for ideas. In the mail that day came a card from the Klause's with a photo of their daughter Mia. "Perfect!" I thought. "Now, I'll just spend a few hours getting a design done for a mosaic and then I can work on building this at the show!" I looked at the clock. 11:45pm. Jeff and Olivia were still with me in the wee hours, and helped plunk down some whites before heading home.

I kept on moving, working on the design, getting prepared for my booth and throwing together lists of things I needed to bring to set up the booth in the morning. The morning was approaching rapidly. In fact, by the time I was ready and mostly packed, the sun was already working on coming out. I took a 60-minute nap and got on the road to the Richmond Convention Center. Of course, none of the doors were unlocked, so I had to drive around to try and find someone who could let me in. Setting up my booth alone takes about an hour and a half, and that doesn't include hauling all of the mosaics in from the parking lot.

With my booth all ready to do business, I took out the newest project and got to work. Lots of folks came by to check out what I was doing. Mothers and their kids came by to get a closer look at the LEGO mosaics. The Spongebob in particular, was a hit. I let them know it was going to be given away at 4pm, and they were excited!

The Expo stayed busy throughout the day. I didn't get much of a chance to continue on with the Baby Mia project. The show closed at 4, and by 6:30 I had the whole booth down and packed in the car. Working a booth makes for a long day, but I was glad to have met more people from Richmond, and to learn first-hand which LEGO mosaics are favorites. Definitely Baby Klause and Spongebob!

The next Baby Expo will be this October 28th in Fredericksburg. See you there!

Play well,

Brian Korte
