Brickworkz LEGO mosaics : Blog : My Un-Gala Experience My Un-Gala ExperienceThe MUSE Award "un-gala" tonight was really a hoot. Quite an honor to be there too! Here's my re-cap:
They then narrowed the list of nominees down to 18 finalists. "After much debate and discussion, we feel that we selected businesses that best represent the spirit of the Muse Awards program," says Teresa DiMarco, managing director of COPC. I was proud to announce in February that Brickworkz was among the finalists for this award!! And see, every year, they gather the finalists, along with Richmond notables and creative-types who gather for the "un-gala," a more lively party than the museum's traditional, formal galas. Every year, the gala has a theme. This year's was following the "ye olde England" theme (that's my term for it at least), which meant that women donned frilly bonnet thingies and the men got to pick either a helmet or a pilgrim hat, and our choice of weapon at the door (I picked the gun over the plastic sword. Much more bad-ass, despite the bright orange tip!) We took a scavenger hunt around the museum, a pretty brilliant way to expose us to what the museum had to offer, and then returned to the marble lobby for all kinds of yummy eats and drinks. Not knowing if Brickworkz was going to be a winner, I opted for Rum & Coke to settle the nerves a bit. ;-) After meeting some nice people at my table from Virginia Film Tours LLC and munching on the yummy goodness, they announced the winners. Now, I was starting to realize what an honor it was to be even among those chosen. They narrowed a list of more than 75 businesses down to 18, and then down to 9. Brickworkz, being only 13 months old at the time, was in the running (among the 18 finalists). Many of the other contenders had dozens of employees and here I was, lil' ol' me. I got really nervous when they hadn't announced my name as they handed out awards to the winners. The MC said "okay, now if your name hasn't yet been called, you're probably the winner or runner up, so here we go..." and I about flipped out. My name hadn't been called. Of course, I was too anxious to notice that the other 9 companies didn't hear their name called either. :-) So, turns out another company got the prize, but it was really a fun event and I was happy to even be considered and to have made it that far. Truly a feather in Brickworkz' cap! ;-) I closed out the evening with another Rum & Coke and talked with Jeff Kelley from the Times-Dispatch for a while. Jeff was the author of the RTD feature article on Brickworkz back in October. He and I have pretty similar views on the future of Richmond. After saying my goodbyes, I headed home- all in all a good time. I was happy to be out of the pilgrim hat though! :-) Play well, Posted by Brian Korte on May 3, 2007 What do you think?
