Planning the Year

I spent most of this month preparing for 2007, particularly planning which events I would choose to have a Brickworkz presence. I think I've picked them out now, but am still looking forward to spontaneity.

BrickFest
Coming up in March is Brickfest PDX. It's a 4-day event in Portland, Oregon for Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOL's).

This is the first year in many that an East coast-based Brickfest won't be held. I was very disappointed in that. Last year's Brickfest was a great time for everyone, save a few of the organizers. From what I've been able to determine, politics and in-fighting over rights sucked the joy from the event. The only people who suffer from that are: everybody else.

I'm not picking sides. After all, that's what happened to get things to this point thus far. What I will do is try and be a part of as many LEGO events as I can, because I believe in the bigger mission of these events- to have fun, to share ideas and to enjoy seeing what fellow fans of LEGO have created.

Unfortunately, the cost of getting mosaics out to Oregon and staying for around a week are too prohibitive. Things might have worked out, but Brickfest was announced too late for me to plan adequately. I am still hoping to help out through sponsorship and other means. More on that soon.

Brickworld
Brickworld will be a similar event held in June in Chicago. Chicago is much closer to Virginia than Oregon, and since there won't be an East coast event, I am going to attend Brickworld.

I'm also planning to host a presentation for mosaic building. It ought to be a great way to give back to the LEGO community. I am also really looking forward to another Chicago trip. It's one of my favorite cities.

Brickworld is going to be held in a larger space than last year's Brickfest, which I already thought was big. Turns out, it wasn't big enough. Vendors (like yours truly) were put in a completely separate area from the general public when the weekend was held. This year at Brickworld, they are going to put everyone together.

Other Events
In addition to the big two events, I am really looking forward to helping other groups. One event in Danville, Virginia, will be a fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy. I hope I can raise some money for them and help to make a difference, no matter how small a drop in the pond it might be.

Another thing on the horizon is a LEGO display down in Disney World this fall. Details are still being worked on, but this might be a ton of fun, fantastic exposure for Brickworkz, and a great relationship-building event with two of my favorite companies: Disney and LEGO.

I hope to repeat the baby & child expo venues I attended last year. Last year's expo was great local exposure for the company. I recently toured the larger Richmond Baby expo and was really impressed. It's on my mental docket for 2008.

Keeping my Options Open
If anything else comes along the horizon, I am open to it. I will certainly be keeping my ears open for opportunities. If you know of any events Brickworkz should be a part of, please let me know!

Play well,

Brian Korte
