The Newsletter switch

It took me a long time to make the switch from plain text to an enhanced HTML newsletter. I waited because frankly, most of the stuff I get in my emails is pure crap. It's spammy, or it doesn't show up right in my email browser. I took a chance, and was pleasantly surprised.

Check out Mailchimp! The newsletter in January was the first of what I hope will be a long future of hassle-free distributions. I made a complete switch from BCC'ing people in my emails to a managed, professional server that helps me maintain the list, helps to unsubscribe people (something I love, since I hate spam with a very deep passion) and reports back on the percentage of people who opened an email. It's not very detailed information, which is good for privacy, but it just lets me know if I'm blathering to myself or not.

With this new system (and it's not even fully set up yet as of this posting) people can voluntarily sign up, instead of waiting for me to type in their information from a form. Also, it has a double authentication system to be sure people don't get signed up (think: prank ordering pizza for strangers)

I pay a bit for the service, but it really isn't bad. I am going to do a bit more work getting things configured, but for now, consider this a recommendation: Mailchimp.com

Play well,

Brian Korte
