The Happy Couple

orig-photo-small.jpg

Earlier this month, we were contacted to design a LEGO mosaic as a wedding anniversary present. This was the original photo to be used.

I was particularly impressed, because this photo was of such high quality and terrific balance & shading, that it did not take too much maneuvering to get just the right look in LEGO bricks.

The Concept

This is the finalized concept for the "Gibbons project"

Framing is complete

Framing is done - Ready for mounting the baseplates. I had a delay in this step because of the weather. I can only work on the deck when it's A) not raining, and B) a reasonable hour to use loud power tools

Anyhow, the frame is ready for attaching baseplates. The build will begin this evening. There's a lot of camera setup & lighting that happens before the build, so I'm going to handle all that this afternoon. The Brickworkz helpers are coming over on Friday night to work on the project. It should be complete by the end of the weekend and probably shipped out by Tuesday.

Help has Arrived!

With the baseplates mounted on the wood frame and the prep work complete, I was ready to begin. I started working for a little while, and then the trusty Brickworkz helpers came in to help me tackle a great majority of the project.

Their help was immense, considering the rushed nature of this project. Here's a shot of us, just getting started.

Special thanks to Olivia, Jeff, Chris R., Ken, Karen (and -6 day old baby), Chris H., Paul, and Molly for all of their help!!

Friday Night's Progress

progress.jpg

By the end of the night, we had made so much progress, that I imagine I can get the rest knocked out today. It'll be tedious, but it's a labor of love. I'm excited!

All in all, it's looking great- the whole thing is really coming together. I expect it to be complete by the end of the day, and maybe we can get it out to Illinois right away!

Project Complete!

final-picture.jpg

After another day building, this LEGO mosaic project is complete! I took a few photos and worked on the video today. This is scheduled to ship out on Monday.

Shipped and On the Way!

It took about 3 hours to wrap and prepare the LEGO mosaic for shipment. We wanted to be sure to protect the corners (the only potential weak spot during shipping) and also be sure that all the LEGO elements stay stuck to the baseplates. As a result, lots of bubble wrap and cardboard elements are securing the mosaic within the "custom box" (made from old Mac hardware boxes)

To make the custom box attractive, we wrapped the outside in a nice, brown paper. I got it into the car and took it over to ship, where they announced that we'd have to strip the paper completely. Great.

It is secure in the box, but now the outside is ugly- So now, the "Frankenstein" box will be what Winton and Andra see when they open it today. I hope the surprise involves a blindfold! =)
