Brickworkz LEGO mosaics : Clientz : The Pollards: To paint or not to paint.... To paint or not to paint....
Paul saw my progress thus far on the site here and suggested that the wood color doesn't really match the image too well, since it's all in a grayscale. He recommended using silver. I gave this a lot of thought, and am still thinking about it. It's thought-provoking. I may pick up some silver paint tonight and try it on a sample piece of wood to see for myself. It'll really piss me off that I paid extra for a high-quality grain type of wood just to paint over it though. Could have gotten plywood if that was the case. Thoughts?? I think the silver might look cheesy. Maybe a gray tone ....but then again...you already said it.....why buy nice maple just to paint over it? I think the plexi-glass is going to look sharp and that the fixtures will look nicer with the maple as it is. The most I would do to the wood would be to wax rub it or do a light, non-glossy, polyurethane-like, finishing coat over top of it before you paste down all of the baseplates. Posted by: Michelle on October 28, 2004 12:55 AM Well, I liked Paul's idea too, so I went and got some silver paint and tested it out on some scrap wood. The silver comes off as darker than I'd like. Also, it made the LEGOs appear to have a greenish tint to them. The more I thought about it, even the lacquer I had on there made the wood darker than I wanted, so I decided to ditch all plans of coloring, and took out my orbital sander. I sanded the board completely clean of any sealer, so it's all now very light colored wood once again. This'll match their decor a whole lot better now. I'm happy again. This looks pretty damned sharp. Posted by: Brian on October 28, 2004 11:24 AM |
