LEGO Mosaic: "Chuck Close"

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is a world-renowned museum in Richmond, Virginia. VMFA hosts a number of summer art camps for children, and I was honored to teach a camp of 10-12 year olds for a week.
Together, we learned about the history of mosaics, learned techniques and the math/science of planning a mosaic project, drew inspiration from pieces within the VMFA galleries and ultimately worked on a group project as a class over a number of days.
I based this LEGO mosaic design on a personal inspiration, Chuck Close. The direction of the camp steered more towards Chuck Close and his methods, his tools and techniques. That ultimately directed us to mimic the style of the colored squares, which border the facial portrait in grayscale.
At the time of this writing, the piece is on display in the Art Education gallery at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. (If you're also a fan, two Chuck Close pieces also hang in the gallery upstairs, which are definitely worth exploring and examining.)
